WTT players make their mark at US Open
The World TeamTennis season may have ended in July, but the impact of WTT players was still being felt at the 2009 US Open.
It started with the inspired run of New York Sportimes' Jesse Witten from qualifying to the third round of the main draw.
There was also the second round upset of No. 15 seed Samantha Stosur by 2009 WTT Female MVP Vania King of the Springfield Lasers. The Washington Kastles' Leander Paes added a men's doubles title to the collection. The women of World TeamTennis closed out the two-plus weeks at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center with Kim Clijsters of the St. Louis Aces winning women's singles; and the Philadelphia Freedoms' Venus Williams and Serena Williams of the Washington Kastles partnering for the women's doubles title.

WOMEN'S SINGLES: A Welcome Return
Let's get this out of the way - everyone loves Kim Clijsters. The legend of how nice she is oft-repeated but nonetheless true. However nice doesn't win you an US Open title . . . but precise power-hitting and a killer forehand will do the trick and Clijsters brought all that and more to the two weeks of the US Open.

Clijsters, who had been away from the game for 18 months to start a family, began her return in July with two matches for the St. Louis Aces. After playing tour events in Cincinnati and Toronto, Clijsters was a sentimental favorite at the US Open but not a top pick of most of the pundits. She proved those experts wrong with impressive victories over Venus Williams in the quarterfinals and Serena Williams in the semifinals. The fairy tale ending was complete when she beat Caroline Wozniacki in the finals 7-5, 6-3 to the delight of the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd and her young daughter Jada (who seemed equally excit ed with seeing herself on the huge video board in Arthur Ashe Stadium). St. Louis Aces General Manager Dani Apted was one of many fans cheering on the first mom to win a Grand Slam title since 1980. "Every time Kim won a match during the US Open, my phone would explode with
texts and updates from Aces fans and friends," said Apted. "I think Aces fans
really felt a connection to her when she was here and seeing her win was like
watching a family member win the US Open! I hope she knows how proud her "St.
Louis Family" is of her and we hope to see her next summer!"

MIXED DOUBLES: Unlikely Champions
The story of the Mixed Doubles Championship started a few years ago when
Travis Parrott (Philadelphia Freedoms) played a WTT match with Carly
Gullickson who was a last minute sub for his teammate Lisa Raymond. Parrott
was scheduled to play with Abigail Spears but she instead partnered with her
Sportimes teammate Robert Kendrick. Parrott sent a last minute text to
Gullickson and an unlikely championship team was formed. Parrott and
Gullickson topped Leander Paes (Washington Kastles) and Cara Black 6-2, 6-4
in the finals to become the 2009 US Open Mixed Doubles Champions.
"Travis is always a fan favorite in Philadelphia," said Freedoms VP of
Business Development Jeff Harrison. "His passion for the game and his team
spirit is what WTT is all about. This is a great win for Travis and we are
all excited for his success."

WOMEN'S DOUBLES: 10 . . . and counting
The women's doubles finals looked like a who's who of WTT standouts with the world's top-ranked doubles team and the world's best-known doubles team facing off in a hard-hitting final. The result was an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win for Venus Williams (Philadelphia Freedoms) and Serena Williams (Washington Kastles) over Liezel Huber (Springfield Lasers) and Cara Black. It's the 10th Grand Slam doubles title for Venus and Serena as a team.

MEN'S DOUBLES: Toughing it out

No one can say that Leander Paes isn't a tough guy. Charming and affable off the court, he's feisty and aggressive on it. However it was his ability to play through pain that helped the 2009 WTT Male MVP earn his second Grand Slam doubles title this year (the duo won the French Open in June). Paes, who suffered a shoulder injury during mixed doubles, teamed with Lukas Dlouhy to outlast the Sacramento Capitals' Mark Knowles and Mahesh Bhupathi 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. It was the 41st overall pro doubles title for Paes and his fifth Grand Slam championship.

Kastles hold court at the US Open
You can't blame Washington Kastles owner Mark Ein if he's still celebrating his team's victory in the Advanta WTT Finals. It may have been six weeks ago when the Kastles completed their unlikely run to their first WTT title and the King Trophy, but it's been non-stop accolades for the Kastles ever since. It started when the team was given the key to the city by Washington D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty a few days before the start of the US Open. During the Open's first week, the Kastles were again recognized on Arthur Ashe Stadium, a first for a WTT Champion. Ein then spent the rest of the Open cheering on the outstanding individual performances of his all-star team. With wins in men's doubles (Paes) and women's doubles (Serena), plus a runnerup finish in mixed doubles (Paes) and two seminfinal appearances (Serena in singles and Rennae Stubbs in women's doubles), it was a great showing for the 2009 WTT champs.

"We're extremely proud of Leander, Rennae, Serena and Nadia (Petrova)
for representing the Washington Kastles with such excellence at this year's US
Open and showing why WTT tennis is as good as it gets," said Ein. "Congratulations to Leander and Serena for winning the men's and
women's doubles championships and Rennae and Serena for their semifinal
results. Kastles' fans have embraced the team as a part of the DC community and
closely followed our players as they compiled their incredible 33-7 US Open
record. It was an unforgettable summer for our franchise for realizing dreams
and winning championships."
