League MVP Vania King ready to kick off US Open

Vania King led the Springfield Lasers to the 2009 Advanta WTT Finals, where they were defeated by the Washington Kastles for the WTT Championship.  King was named as the League's Female MVP.  She's hoping her WTT success pays off at the 2009 US Open where she's entered in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.  Vania blogs about gearing up for the Open and her time in New York City.

August 30, 2009

Hey everyone!

I'm just relaxing here (on Sunday evening) in my Manhattan apartment that I rented for the US Open. My best friend is on the bed after just doing her nails and I'm watching Men In Black 2 on TBS. We went out for Italian for dinner with the best friend of my sister, and afterwards for karaoke in K-town, but heading back at 9pm to complete our early night. I'm playing first match tomorrow at 11am--I will be one of the first to finish my match at the US Open! I'm excited for the US Open--finally it's here! I hope it doesn’t go too quickly either--I've entered into singles, doubles, and mixed, so I have a lot of opportunity here ;).

I just finished playing in the Bronx, a 100k ITF tournament whose tournament hotel was at the Radisson on 48th and Lexington, so I've been in Manhattan for more than a week already. I had never stayed in the city before this year (although I've played maybe five years already), and I'm really enjoying it! I have yet to experience the traffic which is a bane to the players trying to get to the site, but since tomorrow is Monday, I'm sure I'll get it first-hand.

After World TeamTennis, I had a week to recover, and luckily, the next tournament was in Los Angeles, so I could stay at home. I took a few days off and then a few days of practice again before LA. Team Tennis was an amazing experience--I had so much fun, got a lot of match play, bonded with my team, made the finals, and was named MVP (although I feel bad about that after the finals!). It was my first time playing and I really enjoyed the experience.

So I'm going to retire early tonight--I have a car at 8am to the site--to prepare for the traffic. I'm going to try my best tomorrow and hope that all goes well! Well, whatever happens, all will be well, I am lucky to be doing what I am doing :)

Cheers,

Vania
