Margaret Court, who has won more Grand Slam titles than anyone in the history of tennis,
joined the Hawaii Leis in 1975. Court was one of the most admired and accomplished players in women’s tennis when she signed on to play WTT and the 72% increase in Hawaii Leis’ attendance in 1975 was due in no small part to its new member.
In both 1975 and 1976, Court ranked in the WTT women’s singles’ top 10. Court was a force in mixed
doubles as part of an unlikely pairing with the irascible Ilie Nastase during the 1976 season. Fans were surprised and entertained by the partnership between prim and proper Court and outspoken, feisty Nastase. Even though the two seemed mismatched, they were quite successful and ended the season ranked seventh out of thirty-nine mixed doubles teams.
