Four teams earn bid to Nationals in third Mylan WTT Rec national qualifier of 2016

Albany, N.Y. (May 24, 2016) - The Mylan WTT Rec League held its third contest of the year over the weekend in Albany, NY, with 13 teams competing in four divisions. In the end, four teams won titles, two of which will be first-time competitors at the Mylan WTT Nationals in Indian Wells, Calif., November 4-6.

Competing teams represented two states at the tournament held at the Albany Tennis Club in Albany, N.Y. Those advancing to the Nationals include Raffa, of Clifton Park, N.Y.; Evergreen, of Long Valley, N.J.; BCNJ, of Mahwah, N.J.; and NY Silverstreaks, of Troy, N.Y.

The remaining Qualifiers on the Mylan WTT Rec League schedule are as follows: June 10-12 in Key Biscayne, Fla. (Senior divisions only); July 8-10 in Kansas City, Mo.; August 12-14 in Landisville, Pa., and Raleigh, N.C.; and September 16-18 in Irvine, Calif.

SENIOR 3.5 DIVISION:
 
Seven teams competed in the Senior 3.5 Division for the bid to Nationals. It was an exciting division with a few upsets. Two of the Albany powerhouse teams were knocked off by newcomer Albany teams. Bartell had won 3 straight matches before falling to Jo-Anne Raffa’s team in a supertiebreaker. This led to the final between Raffa and the Lobsters. Raffa (pictured to the right) ended up defeating the Lobsters 35-19. Led by Jo-Anne Raffa other members include Al Walton, Nassau, N.Y.; Bruce Clements, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; Jane Gottlieb, Albany, N.Y.; Lisa Leonka, Troy, N.Y.; Andrew Matthews, Judy Pittz, Kathy Moran, and Tim Brennan, all of Clifton Park, N.Y. 

    
 SENIOR 4.0 DIVISION: 
  
  In the Senior 4.0 Division, two teams played each other twice to determine who would get the bid to nationals. Evergreen won twice against Capital Contenders with the scores of 36-13 and 31-12. The winning team was led by non-playing captain Wayne Lin of Long Valley, N.J. The rest of the team going to Nationals includes Seon Kim of Livingston, N.J.; Dean Chan, Fairlawn, N.J.; JoAnn Purdy, Westfield, N.J.; Lucy Discostanzo, New York, N.Y.; Ping Yu, Fort Lee, N.J.; Ronald Ren, Mahwah, N.J.; Sherry Shan, Montville, N.J.; Yoko Kokabu, Wyckoff, N.J.

SENIOR 4.5 DIVISION:

In the Senior 4.5 Division, two teams played each other competitively for the bid to Nationals. Both teams played great and ended up with close scores. BCNJ won against Senior Strokers with the same score of 29-27 twice. BCNJ (pictured to the left) is led by Ronald Ren of Mahwah, N.J. The rest of the team heading to Nationals includes Junji Miyake, Allendale, N.J.; Lucy Discostanzo, New York, N.Y.; Yoko Kokabu, Wyckoff, N.J.; Yukiko Okuda, Tenafly, N.J. 

SUPER SENIOR 3.5 DIVISION:
 
Featuring only two teams, the 3.5 Super Senior division was the most highly contested matchup of the weekend. On Friday, the NY Silverstreaks had a come-from-behind win in the 6th set to win the match 27-26. Then in Saturday’s match, the NY Silverstreaks had won the 6th set but were down 8 games. They won 8 consecutive games in overtime to force a supertiebreaker, where they claimed victory and captured the title. The NY Silverstreaks is led by Suzanne Hauber of Troy, N.Y. The rest of the team heading to Nationals includes David Hauber, both of Troy, N.Y.; James Best, Sherry Best, both of Rensselaer, N.Y.; Leonard Buchakjian, Norman Steele, both of Scotia, N.Y.; Mary Shaffer, Delmar, N.Y.; Thomas Fashouer, Schenectady, N.Y.; B.J. Olesen, Stillwater, N.Y.
