Seven teams earn bid to Nationals in the seventh Mylan WTT Rec national qualifier of 2016

Raleigh, N.C. (August 18, 2016) - The Mylan WTT Rec League held its seventh contest of the year over the weekend in Raleigh, N.C., with teams competing in six divisions. In the end, seven teams won titles to be competitors at the Mylan WTT Nationals in Indian Wells, Calif., November 4-6.

Competing teams represented seven states at the tournament held at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. Those advancing to the Nationals includes In2 Tennis, Cary, N.C.; Racquetship, Virginia Beach, Va.; The Community, Cary, N.C.; Holy Gruhl, North Chesterfield, Va.; Ancient Aces, Cary, N.C.; Indian Wells or Bust, La Mesa, Calif.; and Shorts Skirts / Long Rackets, Virginia Beach, Va.

The remaining Qualifier on the Mylan WTT Rec League schedule is September 16-18 in Irvine, Calif.

3.0 DIVISION:

Three teams competed for the chance to go to Nationals in the 3.0 Division. In2 Tennis started dominating the competition from the first match of the weekend. With a close final match on that Sunday over Summerfield Slammers, In2 Tennis left with a perfect record and their first spot to go to Nationals. In2 Tennis is led by Mike Hiller. Team members include: Cindy Winzenz, Debra Combos, Michael Newton, Sharon Newton, Spencer Combos, Wendy McMillan, all of Cary, N.C.

 

3.5 DIVISION:

The 3.5 Division had the largest turnout with 10 teams competing for the bid to Nationals. Teams were divided into two flights for round robin play and the teams with the best record from each flight met to battle it out for the title. Racquetship and Sweep the Leg sailed through each round ending up undefeated in the finals from their respective flights. Racquetship defeated Sweep the Leg in a Super Tiebreaker with a score of 27-26. Racquetship is led by Brian Sweitzer. Team members include: Deborah Mason, Jessica Waldron, Justin McDaniel, Mark Forster, Russell Smith, Carmelita Tapia, all of Virginia Beach, Va.; Chelsea Courtney, Morgan Kaplan, both of Norfolk, Va.; and Lauren Saft, Chesapeake, Va.

 

4.0 DIVISION:

The 4.0 Division had eight teams competing for the bid to Nationals. Teams were split into two divisions for round robin play with the team earning the best record from each flight meeting to compete for the final match to win it all. The Community had a winning streak throughout the Flight B division and met Clear Eyes, Full Hearts in the final match. The Community just barely held on to the win with a score of 29-23. The Community is led by Traci Harris. Team members include Heidi Kareh, Wendy Howe, all of Cary, N.C.; Lauren Lowman, Marion Wing, Richard McClenny, all of Durham, N.C.; and Malik Daniel, Meghan Howard, Michael Ward, all of Raleigh, N.C.

 

4.5 DIVISION:

The 4.5 Division only had 2 teams from their division and were joined by Short Skirts / Long Rackets of the Senior 4.5 Division. These three teams competed in round robin play. Holy Gruhl were able to clinch the win over #warmupthelatebus and left undefeated in their division. Holy Gruhl is led by Logan Gruhl. Team members include: Albert Thomas, North Chesterfield, Va.; Christina Shifflett, Mechanicsville, Va.; Doug Bond, Henrico, Va.; Sheela Damle, Nathalia Esteves, both of Richmond, Va.; and Rodd Williams, Midlothian, Va.

 

SENIOR 3.5 DIVISION:
 
The Senior 3.5 Division had 2 teams competing for the bid to Nationals. Ancient Aces came out undefeated in two matches over Dirty Sanchez with scores of 36-10 and 36-6. This will be Ancient Aces first time to Nationals. Ancient Aces is led by Elizabeth Duke. Team members include: Bonnie Delmar, David McDaniel, Elaine Auslander, John Krasnick, Harriet Wilson, Kevin Fitzgerald, Molly Grundner and Ray Kwiatek, all of Cary, N.C.

 

SENIOR 4.0 DIVISION:

The Senior 4.0 Division had 4 teams competing in round robin play. Indian Wells or Bust defeated their competition by large margins in each round of play. Their namesake held true as they will be headed to Nationals in November in Indian Wells, Calif. Indian Wells or Bust is led by Steven Kavy. Team members include: Ann Kavy, Kimberly Stromberg, La Mesa, Calif.; Albert Alagata, Beatriz Vega and John Flowers, all of San Diego.

 

SENIOR 4.5 DIVISION:

The Senior 4.5 Division had only one team come out to compete, Short Skirts / Long Rackets. With an automatic bid to Nationals in their pocket, Short Skirts/ Long Rackets headed to the 4.5 Division to play against the younger group. Short Skirts / Long Rackets ended up with a 0-4 round robin record but will be returning to Nationals this year at Indian Wells. Short Skirts / Long Rackets is led by Kathy Courage. Team members include: Melody Harris, Thomas Kuhrt, David Sloane, Beverly Benjumea, all of Virginia Beach, Va.; Louis Manugo, Laura Mitchell, both of Norfolk, Va.; and Derric White, Chesapeake, Va.
