Seven teams earn bid to Nationals in the eighth Mylan WTT Rec national qualifier of 2016

Landisville, Pa. (August 14, 2016) - The Mylan WTT Rec League held its eighth contest of the year over the weekend in Landisville Pa., with teams competing in six divisions. In the end, seven teams won titles to be competitors at the Mylan WTT Nationals in Indian Wells, Calif., November 4-6.

Competing teams represented seven states at the tournament held at the Hempfield Sports Complex in Landisville, Pa. Those advancing to the Nationals includes Raffa, Clifton Park, N.Y.; Kit’s Kommandos, Lancaster, Pa.; Kick Aces, Clark, N.J.; Capital District Smash, Schenectady, N.Y.; Clean Winners, Dover, Pa.; Match Point, Englewood Cliffs, N.J.; Nitjays, Landisville, Pa.; Hot Shots, Millersville, Pa.; and Net Force, Millersville, Pa.

The remaining Qualifier on the Mylan WTT Rec League schedule is September 16-18 in Irvine, Calif.

3.0 DIVISION:

In the 3.0 Division, only one team came out to compete for the bid to Nationals. Raffa came to play and ended up competing against the 3.5 Division teams in round robin play. This will be Raffa’s first time to Nationals in November. Raffa is led by Jo-Anne Raffa. Team members include: Charles Zarriello, Voorheesville, N.Y.; David Liebschutz, Delmar, N.Y.; James Best, Rensselaer, N.Y.; Jessica Lorusso and Linda J. Dygert, both of Schenectady, N.Y.; Jill Sullivan- Keating, Selkirk, N.Y.; Judy Pittz and Tim Brennan, both of Clifton Park, N.Y.; Penny Hill, Rotterdam, N.Y.;  and Shridhar Nath, Niskayuna, N.Y.

3.5 DIVISION:

In the 3.5 Division, seven teams were separated into two flights for round robin play. Top teams from each flight were then sent into semi-finals and then the championship match. Kit’s Kommandos entered the competition with a close loss to Tennis Menace but had revenge in the semi-finals with a win over them of 32-21 to take them into the finals. This will be Kit’s Kommandos’s first time to Nationals. Kit’s Kommandos is led by Kathleen Schlager. Team members include: Angela Cox and Brandon Cox, both of East Petersburg, Pa.; and Jeff Arters, Leola, Pa.

 

4.0 DIVISION:

The 4.0 Division had a huge turnout with 11 teams in the division. Teams were split into three flights. Top winning percentages were taken into the semi-finals, which led to the championship match. Kick Aces could not be stopped and ended up winning the division undefeated, a huge feat for Kick Aces, where they will make their debut at Nationals. Kick Aces is led by Adel Elsekhily. Team members include: Andrew Rosenbloom, Lincroft, N.J.; Julie Monahan, Avon, N.J.; Karen Potaski, Toms River, N.J.; Karen Ellis, Manalapan, N.J.; Mohamed Moamen, Mostafa Moamen, Safie Moamen, all of Morganville, N.J.; Nancy Selph, Bound Brook, N.J.; Nancy Jurczak-Benson, Brick, N.J.

4.5 DIVISION:

The 4.5 Division had a smaller turnout with three teams and was joined by Nitjays from the Senior 4.5 Division. Capital District Smash put it all on the line and left undefeated. Most of Capital District Smash will be returning to Nationals this year. Capital District Smash is led by Patrick Bologna. Team members include: Beverly Swimm, Clifton Park, N.Y.; David Clay and Rachel Hodnett, both of Cohoes, N.Y.; Kirsten Ackerman, Stratford, C.T.; and Matthew Vaughan, Albany, N.Y.

SENIOR 3.5 DIVISION:

The Senior 3.5 Division contained 3 tough competitors. Match Point and Court Jesters split matches but it was Match Point that ended up victorious overall. Most of Match Point’s team members will be returning to Nationals in November. Match Point is led by Donald Yee. Team members include: Chunping Ding, Middletown, N.J.; Feng Hai Xu, Ridgewood, N.J.; Hongfa Zhu, Paramus, N.J.; JoAnn Purdy, Westfield, N.J.; Lisa Zhang, Livingston, N.J.; Lulu Liu, Englewood Cliffs, N.J.; Sherry Shan, Montville, N.J.; Yingfang Tsai, Old Tappan, N.J.; Zhikai Sun, Holmdel, N.J.; and Hank Su, Morris Plains, N.J.
 
SENIOR 4.0 DIVISION:

As the only Senior 4.0 division team to enter the tournament, Clean Winners joined the 4.0 field to compete against 10 other teams but had secured their spot in Nationals already. Clean Winners is led by Karen Sipe. Team members include: Scott Phillips and Craig Martin, both of Dover, Pa.; Amber Roxanne Kroh, Ephrata, Pa.; Cindy Crowley, Eva Hess, Stefan Cravens and Wes Hawk, all of York, Pa.

SENIOR 4.5 DIVISION:

The Senior 4.5 Division only had one team, Nitjays, entered for the tournament. The Nitjays joined the regular 4.5 Division to play against three tough competitors. Nitjays ended up with some close matches, but still automatically had the bid to Nationals. Nitjays is led by Ed Conway. Team members include: Bonnie Westheaffer, John Hufnagel, Kirk Thoman, Linda Scott and MaDonna Hufnagel, all of Lancaster, Pa.; Cathy Wood, Pequea, Pa.; Eric Weitzel, Reinholds, Pa.; and Mark Lewis, Manheim, Pa.

SUPER SENIOR 3.5 DIVISION:

The Super Senior 3.5 Division had a turnout of 3 teams and competed in round robin play. Hot Shots lived up to their name ending the weekend undefeated. Hot Shots will be returning to Nationals and try again for the National title. Hot Shots is led by Linda Witmer. Team members include: Bonnie Nolt, Mountville, Pa.; Carl Just, Newmanstown, Pa.; Elaine Walsh, James Walsh and Kathy Kauffman, all of Lancaster, Pa.; Greg Stauffer, Columbia, Pa.; Robert Wagner and Steve Berkley, both of Landisville, Pa.; and Susan Rebert, Hanover, Pa.

SUPER SENIOR 4.0 DIVISION:

The Super Senior 4.0 Division had 3 teams competing for the chance to travel and compete at Indian Wells in November. No one went undefeated in this division and had a couple of close matches. Net Force barely brought home the bid to Nationals with a close loss to Times 4 of 17-16. Net Force will be returning to Nationals this year to try their chance again at the title. Net Force is led by Linda Witmer. Team members include: Jay Witmer, Millersville, Pa.; Carl Just, Newmanstown, Pa.; Cindy Irwin, Elaine Walsh, James Walsh, Jeffrey Kauffman, John Irwin and Kathleen Kauffman, all of Lancaster, Pa.; and Pam Kaylor, Manheim, Pa.
