Five-time singles champion Venus Williams (Washington Kastles) turned things around to defeat Qiang Wang 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Donald Young (Philadelphia Freedoms) took on fellow lefty Rafael Nadal in a second-round clash on Centre Court. Anna-Lena Groenefeld (Springfield Lasers) and Kveta Peschke (Philadelphia Freedoms) eased past Viktorija Golubic and Kristyna Pliskova 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. Sam Querrey (Washington Kastles), a quarterfinalist at last year's event, defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to book his place in the third round. Andreja Klepac (Orange County Breakers) and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez edged Anastasia Rodionova (Washington Kastles) and Arina Rodionova in three sets. Kirsten Flipkens partnered Sania Mirza (left) to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Naomi Osaka and Shuai Zhang.
